• Festivals and Fairs |
||||
| Sardinian people are very attached to their traditions, specially
the religious ones. There is not a month that goes by without a fair taking
place somewhere in the island. The majority of these fairs is nevertheless held in the spring and summer months. Like all agro-pastoral societies, Sardinian life used to follow the pattern of the seasons; everyday-life was dictated by the rhythms of the land. The fairs were moments when people gathered together to propitiate a good harvest or to thank God for a good one; to pray in moments of difficulty, epidemics and famine. |

In modern times some of these fairs have been lost as the pace of modern life reached these shores, but lately there seems to be a new consciousness to the importance of these traditions, in order to hold on to an identity that could be lost at the altar of cultural globalisation. The major festivals have never lost their appeal to old and young alike, as they are the essence of Sardinia through time: the produce of the land and sea, the valiancy of the games, with the men horseracing at mad pace within limited confines, the quality and beauty of the womens creations (bread, pastry, embroidery, tapestry, basketry). The celebration itself deserves to be celebrated. | |||
